The duck and I.

Look calm? Wrong. This water is high and fast. This is where the big water starts. Adams Island sits in shadow across to the left. Between it and I runs Hanson's Slough from off camera left down into the center toward the Mississipi. I am sitting in Shaff Creek with the flooding Wapsi current pushing me into the slough ahead. The low, far distant treeline is the Illinois shore about two miles down the slough and across the river.

Notice how easily the trees loose their footing in the high water and fall into the current. No shoreline is visible, only branches sticking up from the water.

The little duck in the center was smarter than me. I paddled out into the slough just enough to verify that I didn't belong there. The duck watched.
